Bed bugs in hotels and short lets in Bristol

Bristol has hundreds of guest rooms around the Harbourside, Temple Quarter and the centre, and thousands of short lets in Clifton, Southville and Stokes Croft. Each turnover brings in luggage from somewhere else, so a bed bug complaint is a matter of when, not if.

The aim is to deal with the room quickly, quietly and properly, so it can be let again and the problem does not move along the corridor.

In brief

  • Close the affected room and the rooms either side until they are checked.
  • Bag the bedding in the room; do not carry it down the corridor loose.
  • Heat gets a room back fastest; a spray course leaves residual protection.
  • Keep a log of each room, what was found and what was done.

When a guest reports bites

  1. Move the guest, not the bed

Offer a new room but have the guest's luggage checked or bagged first, so the bugs do not travel with them.

  2. Close the room

Strip the bedding into sealed bags inside the room and send it for a hot wash. Leave the mattress and furniture where they are.

  3. Inspect three rooms

The affected room and the rooms on each side, plus the one above and below if the building allows it.

  4. Treat and log

Heat or spray as the inspection recommends, then a written record for your files and any insurer.

  5. Check before reletting

A follow-up look, and monitors under the bed, before the room goes back on sale.

Short lets and serviced apartments

A short let is a home with a hotel's turnover. Cleaners are the first line: a quick look at mattress seams, the headboard and the sofa at every change takes a minute once they know what to look for. Pale-coloured mattress encasements make spots easy to see.

When a booking is cut short, block the following nights rather than reletting the next day. A heat treatment usually has the flat ready within 24 hours; a spray course means two visits two weeks apart, with the flat usable in between once the products are dry.

Flats in converted Clifton and Hotwells houses share floors and walls with long-term residents. If guests report bites, tell the freeholder or managing agent so the neighbouring flats can be checked too.

Keeping rooms clear

Luggage racks
Metal racks away from the bed and walls keep cases off carpets and upholstery.
Turnover checks
A short checklist for housekeeping: seams, headboard, sofa, and the gap behind the bedside table.
Scheduled inspections
A specialist survey every three to six months, or more often near stations and venues with high turnover.
Staff training
Show staff photos of each life stage from the BPCA, so early signs are reported, not cleaned away.

Hotel and short-let questions

How quickly can a hotel room be treated in Bristol?
Often the same or the next day, outside guest hours if needed. With heat the room can be back in use that evening once it has cooled and been checked.
Do we have to close the whole floor?
Rarely. Close the affected room and inspect the rooms either side. Widen it only if those show signs.
What about a guest who says they were bitten?
Take it seriously, offer another room after checking their luggage, and keep a record. Bites alone do not prove bed bugs, which is why the inspection matters.
Is heat or spray better for a hotel room?
Heat gets the room back fastest and kills eggs in one go. A spray course costs less per room and leaves a residual in place. Many hotels use heat for the room and a residual around it.
Do short-let hosts need a specialist?
Yes. Shop products tend to scatter bed bugs into neighbouring rooms and flats, and a guest review mentioning bed bugs costs far more than a treatment.
