Three ways it is treated
- 01
Inspection
Confirms it is bed bugs and maps which rooms are involved. Often taken off the treatment price.
£65 to £130
- 02
Spray course
Residual insecticide in seams, joints and edges, with steam on beds and sofas. Two or three visits about a fortnight apart.
from £300 to £560
- 03
Heat treatment
Rooms and furniture held above 50°C until every stage is dead. One long day and a check.
from £720 to £1,150
Which one suits you depends on how far the bugs have spread and the building. Many specialists combine a spray with steam, or heat with a residual barrier at the skirting.
Bristol, specifically
Six things about the city that change how bed bugs are treated here.
- 01
Converted houses
Much of Redland, Cotham, Bishopston, Montpelier and Clifton is tall Victorian terraces split into two to five flats. Bed bugs move through floor voids, pipe boxing and gaps at the skirting, so the flats above and below matter as much as your own. A good treatment includes the shared walls, and it pays to ask the neighbours.
- 02
Students and shared houses
With two universities and tens of thousands of students, Bristol has a lot of shared houses, and a lot of luggage, second-hand furniture and laundry moving between them. Outbreaks tend to show in October and January. In a shared house the whole house is treated, not one room.
- 03
Licensing
Bristol runs additional HMO and selective licensing on top of the national HMO rules, covering many shared houses and some single lets. Licence holders must keep homes free of hazards, which in practice means the landlord arranges treatment. Our landlords page sets out the usual split.
- 04
Harbourside hotels and short lets
Hotels around the docks and Temple Quarter, and short lets across Clifton, Southville and Stokes Croft, turn rooms over daily. A complaint needs the room closed, the rooms either side checked and a treatment that gets it back on sale quickly. See hotels and short lets.
- 05
The council
Bristol City Council runs a pest control service for some pests. We could not confirm its current bed bug service or price, so check there first if cost is the main concern. Council and housing association tenants should report to their landlord, who may need to treat neighbouring flats as well.
- 06
Parking and stairs
Resident parking zones in the centre and Clifton, and top-floor flats with no lift, add time to a visit and especially to a heat day. Tell us both on the form so the price you get is right first time.
After you book
What a typical Bristol job looks like from the first message to the all-clear.
A specialist is lined up
Someone who works in your postcode and with your kind of building, from a Hotwells flat to an Easton terrace.
Inspection and a fixed price
Usually within a few days. You get the method, the dates and a preparation list written for your home.
Preparation
Bedding and clothes washed at 60°C and bagged, floors cleared around the beds. Carry on sleeping in your usual bed until the visit, so the bugs do not move rooms.
Treatment
The first spray visit with steam, or the heat day. You and any pets stay out for as long as you are told.
Follow-up and sign-off
A second spray visit about two weeks later, or a check after heat. Done when there are no live bugs and no new bites.
