Bed bug inspections in Bristol
An inspection answers two questions: is it bed bugs, and how far have they got? The answer sets the price of everything that follows, so it is worth having before you pay for a treatment.

In brief
- Confirms it is bed bugs and not carpet beetles, fleas or a skin reaction.
- Maps which rooms are affected, which sets the treatment price.
- Ends with a plan, a fixed price and a preparation list.
- Many specialists deduct the fee if you book the treatment with them.
What gets checked
A thorough inspection is close work with a torch, a scraper and sometimes a magnifier.
- The bed
- Mattress seams, piping and labels; the divan base and its fabric underside; slats and headboard joints. Most bed bugs in a home are within two metres of where someone sleeps.
- Around the bed
- Bedside tables, the skirting and carpet edge, picture frames, plug sockets and the gap behind a fitted wardrobe.
- Sofas and chairs
- Where someone dozes in the evening, under cushions and along the frame.
- Other rooms
- Each bedroom and the living room, so the plan covers everything and nothing is treated that does not need it.
- The building
- In a converted house or block, shared walls, pipe runs and the stairwell, and a note of which neighbours to ask.
Signs you can look for first
The NHS lists the usual signs: bites, often in a line on skin left uncovered at night; small dark spots of droppings on the mattress; blood spots on sheets; and the bugs themselves, flat and brown, about 5mm long. Pale empty skins and tiny white eggs collect in seams.
Bites alone are not proof. Many people do not react to bites at all, and plenty of rashes look the same. If you find a bug, put it in a sealed bag or photograph it next to a coin. That makes an inspection quicker and often confirms the job on the spot.

Inspections in Bristol lets and flats
Bristol has a large private rented sector and a lot of furnished lets, from student houses in Redland to studios near Temple Meads. Inspections between tenancies are cheap insurance: finding bugs in an empty let costs far less than treating a full one later, and it gives a landlord a dated record of the condition at handover.
If you rent, tell your landlord or agent in writing as soon as you suspect bed bugs. Homes must be fit to live in under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018, and an early, documented inspection usually settles who arranges the treatment.
